BLM lifts restrictions on fires statewide

Officials with the Bureau of Land Management announced fire restrictions statewide will be rescinded as of 10 a.m. today.

The lifting of the restrictions is a sign that one of Utah's worst fire seasons in history may have come to a close.

Utah saw its biggest fire in history this year — the Milford Flat fire burned nearly 560 square miles in Beaver and Millard counties — and almost 1.5 million total acres of land burned statewide.

The land service was able to lift restrictions following cooler temperatures and rain, which brought fire weather indices back to normal, according to Jeff Kline, fire management officer of the Salt Lake Field Office.

Though the restrictions have been lifted, officials continue to urge the public to use caution when camping or recreating outdoors. Small fuels such as grasses could still catch fire, Kline said.
