LARAMIE, Wyo. If Utah State's first two football games were compared to a 100-meter race, the Aggies have fallen twice with the lead once at the 80-meter mark and once at the 90-meter mark.
The Aggies, who led by a point heading into the fourth quarter for the second straight week, allowed 15 fourth-quarter points en route to a 32-18 loss to Wyoming on Saturday.
"We did some better things in the second half, but it wasn't good enough to win the ballgame on the road," said Utah State football coach Brent Guy, whose team has now lost seven straight road games. "We narrowed it down a little bit to a smaller window in the fourth quarter four or five plays to what it was a week ago."
The Aggies, who lost a fourth-quarter lead against UNLV in Week 1, held the ball for six minutes in the fourth quarter. The defense had the Cowboys in third-down situations four times and could never come up with a key stop.
"The defense you've got to put it on us," Utah State linebacker De'von Hall said. "They went to their four-minute offense and, flat-out, the defense couldn't stop them. We need to put it on our backs."
The Cowboys (2-0) had the ball two times in the fourth quarter and scored both times. Wynel Seldon, who finished with 16 carries for 85 yards, had two 1-yard touchdown runs. His first with 6:54 left in the game gave the Cowboys the lead for good. His second, which came shortly after a Leon Jackson III fumble deep in Aggie territory, iced it with 1:44.
"We did a better job of competing all the way closer to the end, but we still didn't finish," Guy said. "We couldn't get off the field a few times right there at the end, and we couldn't get anything going on offense."
The Aggies trailed 14-6 midway through the third quarter, but the defense gave the Aggies the lead with interceptions in back-to-back possessions.
Hall returned a Karsten Sween pass 38 yards for a touchdown with 4:22 left in the third quarter, and after Marquis Charles intercepted a pass, Jackson hit Kevin Robinson with a 16-yard touchdown pass to give the Aggies an 18-14 lead with 3:15 left in the third quarter.
Wyoming's Billy Vinnedge booted a 25-yard field goal late in the third quarter, and Seldon scored his two touchdowns in the fourth to give the Cowboys the win.
