2 who took bicycle in Y. coed case explain actions
Orem residents Ben Marks, 19, and Patricia Madsen, 17, said they came across the purple and silver Schwinn bike at Bridal Veil Falls on Saturday around 1 a.m. Marks said they thought the bike was abandoned.
"I just didn't really think it was going to be of any use to anybody," he told KSL.
Marks used wire cutters to snip the lock. They took the bike home so he could use the parts to fix his own bike.
On Wednesday, Marks saw pictures of Cleverley's bike and he realized it was just like the one they took. He called Madsen.
"He said he was sure that it was her bike and we had to turn it in," she said on KSL.
The two decided to tell their parents first. Marks said his mom yelled at him for nearly four hours. "She was very mad," he said on KSL.
The families contacted defense lawyer Catherine Cleveland for legal advice, and the teens turned the bike over to the police Thursday morning, Cleveland said.
Cleveland said police do not plan to press charges against Marks and Madsen.
"I wasn't taking it to be a thief," Marks said on KSL. "I was taking it because I didn't think it belonged to anybody who needed it."
