The Davis Applied Technology College, whose president, Michael Bowhuis, is on the Layton City Council, has a composites program that will double in size after the Utah Legislature appropriated money to move the college's diesel program to a new building.
That will allow DATC more space to bring in more students who could step into composites jobs that pay $14 to $25 per hour upon graduation.
Hart said the theory for developing the east side of the base is to locate light industrial businesses closer to the base with a business/research park farther to the east.
Within the next few months, Hart said, the base could open its East Gate for traffic, which would alleviate the backups that happen at its South Gate, located at Hill Field Road and state Route 193.
County commissioners commended Layton for its vision and planning for the east side of Hill and said they wish the development could happen tomorrow.
