LOCATION: Northwest corner of Wyoming, plus parts of Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone is the world's first national park, created in 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant.

ACCOMMODATIONS: Excellent lodging and restaurants are available at nine locations inside the park. There are also four campgrounds and an RV Park. Contact concessioner Xanterra Parks and Resorts, 866-439-7375, 307-344-7311, www.travelyellowstone.com.

ACTIVITIES: Fishermen pursue Yellowstone cutthroat trout and rainbow trout throughout the park. Grebe Lake, known for arctic grayling, requires a 3.2-mile hike. Almost 1,000 miles of hiking paths lace through the park. Guided wildlife hikes are available through the nonprofit Yellowstone Association Institute (www.yellowstoneassociation.org).

RETRO TOURING: This summer eight refurbished Old Yellow Buses returned after a 50-year absence. The 13-seater convertible vehicles carry fun-seekers to attractions on guided tours. In Roosevelt Country, authentic stagecoach rides deliver old-fashioned fun. Guests can travel in a covered wagon to an Old West cookout (866-439-7375, 307-344-7311, www.travelyellowstone.com).
