Out of courtroom, onto the field

Congratulations, NFL fans. You survived the off-season.

Not that it wasn't fun.

Sorry to interrupt the legal proceedings, but now that some of the miscreants have been kicked out of class — Pacman, Tank, Mike Vick, Odell Thurman, Chris Henry — it's time to start the 2007 NFL season and not a moment too soon.

The league's new theme: Behind every great player, there's a lawyer.

Or an actress having a baby, whatever.

After the ugliest off-season in the history of sports, it's finally time to get out of the courtroom and onto the field. Looking ahead to the upcoming season ... your questions answered.

What subject will be beat into the ground endlessly by the boys in the TV booth?

Speculation about Favre's retirement. Vince Young. All things Vick. The good news: The Terrell Owens sideshow has been silent (so we do have to thank Vick for something).

What player will surprise fans this season?

Utah rookie Eric Weddle. Chargers GM A.J. Smith took some heat for trading two picks to move up 25 spots in the draft so he could draft Weddle, but Weddle has backed up the move.

Story continues below
"We think Eric Weddle is a special player," Smith told the San Diego Union Tribune. "Always has been. What I've seen from him is everything I expected. He just has a great knack for playing this game."

Who are the NFL's most overrated players?

Now that Vick is on the sideline, the most overrated player is — and I know I'm raining on the parade here — Brett Favre, with Vince Young a close second.

Favre has been on an extended media honeymoon based on the first decade of his career, but his game hasn't matched his reputation for some time. In the last two seasons he has produced 47 interceptions, 38 touchdown passes and 12 fumbles. Memo to Packers: A little help, please (as in a better supporting cast).

In Young we have the Vick Phenomenon all over again — a lot of hype based on running skills and Madison Avenue, but nothing to suggest he's a great quarterback. The media hyperventilated over this guy last season, when he had a quarterback rating of 66, which, when translated, means "not good."

Can LDS missionaries play in the NFL?

Quarterback John Beck is considered Miami's quarterback of the future, especially after a terrific preseason in which he led two fourth-quarter comebacks and threw two touchdown passes against Tampa Bay. Fans are lobbying for Beck to play immediately, but the Dolphins want to give him the Phillip Rivers/Carson Palmer treatment and bring him along slowly.
