Willie Mays making that over-the-shoulder catch. Brooks Robinson barehanding a bunt. Roberto Clemente unleashing a rifle throw.

Think of the most spectacular fielding plays in baseball history and those spring to mind. They're also what helped put those greats on the all-time Rawlings Gold Glove team released Wednesday.

Big Red Machine teammates Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan, glove whiz Ozzie Smith and current stars Ken Griffey Jr. and Greg Maddux were picked in the fan voting.

Plus, on the 50th anniversary of the first Gold Glove awards, there was a surprise among the big names: Wes Parker, a defensive ace in the 1960s and early 1970s, beat out the likes of Don Mattingly and Keith Hernandez at first base.

The nine winners have combined to earn 100 Gold Gloves, which are chosen annually by major league managers and coaches.

Nearly 1 million votes for the all-time team were received online through the mail and in person at sporting goods stores.

TREMBLEY TO RETURN: Dave Trembley will return next season as manager of the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles scheduled a news conference for Wednesday afternoon to announce that Trembley, who took over for fired manager Sam Perlozzo on June 18, will retain the position entering the 2008 season, said Andy MacPhail, president of baseball operations for the team.

MacPhail declined to comment further until the news conference.

Trembley was assured July 31 that he would be allowed to finish the current season. The team considered the possibility of conducting a managerial search during the offseason, but Trembley's no-nonsense manner and surprising success earned him an extended look.

ATHLETICS ACTIVATE LOAIZA: The Oakland Athletics activated right-hander Esteban Loaiza from the 15-day disabled list before Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing Loaiza to make his first start of the season. To make room on the roster, the Athletics placed infielder Donnie Murphy on the 15-day DL with a strained rib cage muscle and moved right-hander Rich Harden (strained right shoulder) from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL.

ROYALS' PEREZ ON DL: The Kansas City Royals placed left-hander Odalis Perez on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a left knee sprain and recalled outfielder Shane Costa from Triple-A Omaha. Perez is 8-11 with a 5.57 ERA. He is expected to miss at least three weeks
