SCHOOL ENROLLMENT

• This fall, more than 540,000 children are projected to return to Utah public schools, State Office of Education data show.

• Schools needed 14,500 additional desks to accommodate them all.

• The 2.8 percent enrollment increase from fall 2006 isn't as big as the jump seen the year before.

• In fall 2006, an additional 15,700 students enrolled in public schools, for a total of 525,700 students.

• Enrollment is expected to rise between 13,000 and 17,000 students a year through 2016.

• Enrollment is projected to hit 681,500 in 2016. That's 100,000 more students than the state enrolled in 2002.
