Utahns have until 5 p.m. Friday to submit nominations for the 2007 Governor's Medal for Science, says the state science adviser's office.

"The governor's medal is annually awarded as a symbol of recognition for those individuals who have provided distinguished service to the state of Utah in science and technology," wrote Dottie Henderson, administrative assistant to the adviser, in an e-mail announcement.

Nominations can be made for any of four categories: academic, science education, industry and government. The industry category can include independent inventors and entrepreneurs.

Any Utahn or Utah organization may submit nominations. Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. will honor those selected at a fete later in the year.

According to the release, the State Advisory Council on Science and Technology administers the award and recommends nominees to the governor. A one-page form that initiates a nomination can be found on the Internet at www.science.utah.gov/medals.

"Nominees selected from the first round of applications will be asked to submit a more complete application package," says the release. "Nominees must meet a residency of Utah requirement detailed in the 'Procedures and Criteria for Selection' document located on the same medal awards link."

Nominations must be mailed to the state science adviser and received by 5 p.m. Friday.

The address is State Science Advisor, Governor's Office of Economic Development, 324 S. State, Suite 500, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. The fax number is 801-538-8888.
