Several sheep auctioned off at the Salt Lake County Fair on Saturday garnered thousands of dollars that will be donated to the families of the Crandall Canyon Mine victims.

The money earned from the animals that kids purchase and raise to sell at the Junior Livestock Auction often only covers the cost of rearing the animal, said fair coordinator Sarah Dibble.

"The kids often barely break even," she said.

4-H Club member Jake Peacock, 9, raised a sheep on his own and auctioned it off to his grandpa, Jim Peacock, who asked that his sheep be resold and the proceeds be given to the people affected by the mine collapses in Huntington.

When his sheep was put back on auction, bidders collectively donated $2,400 to the cause. A check will be delivered to the fund, set up at Zions Bank sometime this week, Dibble said.
