EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. David Beckham made his first Major League Soccer start and set up a pair of goals by Carlos Pavon in the first eight minutes, but the New York Red Bulls rallied for a wild 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy when Juan Pablo Angel scored his second goal of the game in the 88th minute.
Giants Stadium is nearly empty for most Red Bulls' games the team's average of 11,573 for its first 10 home matches was next to last in the league but a crowd of 66,237 came out for Beckham. It was the largest in franchise history and the largest there for a U.S. league game since the Cosmos drew 70,312 against Fort Lauderdale on June 22, 1980.
Jozy Altidore, a 17-year-old player who could soon earn a callup to the U.S. national team, scored a pair of second-half goals for the Red Bulls raising his season total to seven. Clint Mathis had a first-half goal for New York (10-7-3).
With the Galaxy (3-8-5) trailing 4-2, Landon Donovan scored in the 71st minute and Edson Buddle got the tying goal in the 82nd after Beckham's corner kick was headed off a post by Kyle Veris. Angel poked in a shot in the 88th for the go-ahead goal, extending the Galaxy's MLS winless streak to five games (0-3-2).
It was the 11th time in MLS history teams have combined for nine or more goals in a game.
UNITED 2, CREW 0: At Columbus, Ohio, Luciano Emilio scored his MLS-leading 14th goal, lifting D.C. United over Columbus.
Brazilian midfielder Fred also scored for United (10-6-3), who remained tied with New York for second place in the Eastern Conference. Columbus (6-7-8) is fighting to qualify for the MLS playoffs following an early-season slump.
Both goals came in the second half of a tightly contested match played in front of a crowd of 21,639.
TORONTO FC 2, CHIVAS USA 0: At Toronto, Maykel Galindo and Sacha Kljestan scored to help Chivas USA extend Toronto FC's winless streak to seven games.
Toronto (5-11-5) hasn't scored a goal in 552 minutes. The team didn't get its first shot on goal until the 37th minute.
Chivas USA captain Jesse Marsch hit Galindo with a 40-yard pass, and the striker raced toward the goal before scoring his team-leading eighth goal. With Toronto pressing for the tie, Chivas made it 2-0 on a breakaway with two minutes remaining as Kljestan had an easy finish in front of the goal.
