SOCCER: In the first preseason poll of the women's soccer season, BYU is ranked 23rd by Soccer Buzz Magazine. The Cougars are also 7th in the West Region. In last year's poll, BYU (13-3-4) finished the year ranked 22nd. BYU returns 10 starters including All-American junior forward Katie Larkin and First Team All-Conference goalkeeper Erika Woodbury. The Cougars open the season on a three-game road swing to Michigan State (Aug. 31), Kansas (Sept. 6) and 21st ranked Colorado (Sept. 8). The home opener is Sept. 11 against 25th ranked Long Beach State at 7 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL: For the first time since 2002, the BYU women's volleyball team will begin the season ranked in the top 25. The Cougars, who finished last year at No. 20, are ranked 17th in the preseason poll released Tuesday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. In addition, the Cougars have been tabbed as the early favorite to win the Mountain West Conference title.

ACADEMICS: The Salt Lake Community College women's softball team was recently named one of the NJCAA Academic Teams of 2006-07. The Bruins, 2007 Scenic West Athletic Conference champions, maintained a 3.3 grade point average for the school year. Salt Lake had five players named distinguished academic all-Americans and one player named academic all-American. The team also boasted two players, freshman Megan Staley and sophomore Cara Wright, who achieved a perfect 4.00 gpa.

Utah

SOCCER: The University of Utah women's soccer team will play an exhibition match against Weber State Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.The match will be before Real Salt Lake's contest with the Chicago Fire and will tentatively kick off at 4:15 p.m.. Both Utah and Weber State teams will be honored at halftime of the Real-Fire contest for participating in U.S. Soccer's Passback program.

VOLLEYBALL: The University of Utah volleyball team begins the season ranked No. 21 in the CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Coaches Poll.

"I think it shows great respect for winning tradition of our program," Utah coach Beth Launiere said. "With that said, all that matters to us is getting ready for our opening match."
