Crews continue to try to reach the trapped miners underground through existing tunnels. That too, has been problematic. Overnight, another "bump" caused debris from the walls to fall on top of a continuous mining machine being used to drill through a collapsed section of the Crandall Canyon Mine. Underground efforts were halted for several hours while the machine was repaired. At last report, rescuers had drilled through about 800 feet of the 2,000 feet to where the miners are thought to be.

It has been 10 days since Kerry Allred, Luis Hernandez, Carlos Payan, Don Erickson, Manuel Sanchez and Brandon Phillips were trapped as a portion of the mine collapsed. The seismic event was so powerful it registered 3.9 on the Richter scale. Murray insists an earthquake caused the collapse.

Seismologists disagree, saying the collapse itself created the seismic recording.

Late this afternoon, the University of Utah Seismograph Stations released more information that they said backed up their claim that mining activity caused the seismic event. Their data showed 152 seismic events around the Crandall Canyon mine from August 2005 until the Aug. 6 collapse.

"Experience elsewhere suggests that most, if not all, of the events are probably shallow and mining-related," the U. said on its Web site.
