Inmates at the Utah State Prison have been mourning the loss of officer Stephen Anderson.

Anderson was slain June 25, allegedly by inmate Curtis Allgier during an escape attempt.

A group of inmates donated more than $1,000 from their commissary accounts to Anderson's family. Prison officials have said the inmates respected and liked Anderson.

"We were pretty surprised at what the amount was," said corrections spokesman Jack Ford said. "It really showed that the inmates cared about him."
