A quick recap of Thursday's practices:

BYU

First down: The Cougars practiced in full pads for the first time Thursday, creating some spirited moments. BYU begins two-a-days today.

Head-turner: Several receivers made impressive catches Thursday, including Austin Collie, Matt Allen and walk-on Tyler Kozlowski, son of former Cougar great Glen Kozlowski.

Injury report: Coach Bronco Mendenhall reported that senior safety Dustin Gabriel will undergo surgery and will be out for the season.

UTAH

First down: The Utes held their first two-a-day with sessions in the morning and afternoon. They are scheduled to scrimmage today at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Head-turner: Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said the secondary took another step forward and that the run game was solid.

Injury report: Injured tailback Matt Asiata wore a protective boot and was on crutches a day after injuring his left foot. The mild sprain has him listed as day-to-day.
