UTAH

First down: The Utes added shoulder pads as they move through the NCAA's acclimation period. Split practices were held at the McCarthey Practice Fields.

Head-turner: Head coach Kyle Whittingham was pleased with the speed and athleticism in practice while complimenting defensive back Robert Johnson and tailback Matt Asiata.

Injury report: Sophomore nose tackle Zeke Tuinei-Wily suffered a shoulder stinger.

BYU

First down: Manase Tonga, suspended for the Arizona game, made his first appearance at practice.

Head-turner: Max Hall's 17-yard first-down timing pass to TE Dennis Pitta during 11-on-11 drills.

Injury report: Safety Dustin Gabriel has been cleared to practice but suffers from a rare foot ailment and is nursing several stingers.
