AN EVEREST EVENING

Conrad Anker, a number of Mount Everest summits, and the work of the high-altitude workers of Nepal will be celebrated at An Everest Evening at Snowbird.

The Snowbird Renaissance Center and Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation will host a fund-raiser for the Khumbu Climbing School on Aug. 9. Featured guests will be Anker and several other Western and Sherpa summiters.

The event will be held at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird.

This is a fund-raiser for the Khumba Climbing School in the village of Phortse in the Everest Region of Nepal.

World record holder Apa Sherpa and other Sherpa guests from the school will be present.

Anker's successful ascent of the North Ridge of Everest and Apa Sherpa's successful Super Sherpa summit on the South Side will be revisited.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a live auction, silent auction and reception. The auction will include a donated wooden Grivel ice ax signed by all of the Everest summiters at the event. A ticket to the event is $50. For reservations and information on tickets call 801-933-2147.

APPLY FOR SWAN PERMITS

The Internet might be the only way to apply for a Utah swan-hunting permit this year.

If the Utah Wildlife Board approves a Division of Wildlife Resources recommendation, paper applications for swan permits will no longer be accepted. The board meets on Aug. 8.

Those applying for a permit can visit the Web site at www.wildlife.utah.gov starting Aug. 10. Online applications must be received through the site no later than 11 p.m. on Aug. 24.

The DWR is recommending 2,000 permits for the hunt. Last year, 3,708 hunters applied for the 2,000 available permits.

Hunters must complete a one-time swan course before submitting an application. Those who have taken the course need not take it again.

The course takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. It will be available at www.wildlife.utah.gov by the time the application period starts.

For more information, call the nearest DWR office or call 801-538-4700.
