West Jordan neighborhoods plan Night Out on Aug. 7

More than 20 West Jordan neighborhoods are expected to hold block parties during the National Night Out Against Crime Aug. 7.

The party is part of the 24th annual National Night Out Against Crime, when more than 35 million people in 11,000 communities throughout the U.S., Canada and military bases around the world participate.

West Jordan has 135 Neighborhood Watch organizations. For information on holding a block party or creating a neighborhood watch organization, call Christie Jacobs at 256-2033.

Tickets are on sale now for the first-ever concert to be held in the West Jordan Arena. Diamond Rio is coming Aug. 24. Diamond Rio is known for its eclectic blend of modern country, traditional bluegrass with a hint of rock and roll tossed into the mix. Local favorite Contagious will be opening for the show. Two members of Contagious live in West Jordan; the other lives in Sandy. J. Marc Bailey will also be part of the pre-concert show. Tickets are available at www.wjordan.com.

The first-ever West Jordan Days will be Aug. 17-18. The city has unofficially passed the 100,000 population mark, and Mayor Dave Newton and City Council members want to celebrate. West Jordan Days will be held at Veterans Memorial Park, 1985 W. 7800 South beginning Friday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. Friday's events include stage entertainment, food and commercial booths that showcase the best of West Jordan, family and coed softball tournament, "Night at the Museum" hits the big movie screen at about 8:30 p.m. with fireworks following.

Saturday, Aug. 18 kicks off with the Children's Justice Center's 5K and Teddy Bear 1K fund-raiser at 8 a.m. Bikers Against Child Abuse and Ladies from the Red Hat Society will help host the event. Park activities run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and include a classic car show, "Faces of West Jordan" winners, mayor's parade with 100 children to represent 100,000 residents, a Dutch oven cookoff and more.
