MURRAY — Two people, including a man police say was responsible for a shooting in the middle of a busy street in broad daylight earlier this week, were arrested by police Friday. Arrests and charges were pending against at least three others.

Jeremy Peterson, 30, was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, and aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony. Police may seek to have those charges increased to attempted homicide when they are screened with the Salt Lake District Attorney's Office.

Also arrested Friday was a female acquaintance of Peterson, 27-year-old Sadie McKenna. She was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of methamphetamine possession.

Peterson was arrested following a shooting that was originally investigated as a possible carjacking or possible road rage. But investigators said Friday it was neither.

"This was not a random shooting," said South Salt Lake Police Capt. Tracy Tingey.

Although Tingey would not talk Friday about a possible motive, he noted that Peterson and the victim had mutual acquaintances.

Police say Peterson was the gunman who opened fire on a 38-year-old driver of a red Jeep Wednesday. A gunman jumped into the passenger seat of a Jeep stopped near 2700 South and 300 East. As the driver tried to get away, he was shot twice. The Jeep stopped just a few blocks away. The gunman then got out of the vehicle, walked around to the front and fired several more rounds at the victim through the windshield, police say. The victim was in critical condition in a local hospital Friday.

Friday, a South Salt Lake SWAT officer who developed information on the alleged gunman, watched as a man got out of a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of an extended-stay motel near 6600 South and 1040 East. The man got into another car driven by a woman about 9:15 a.m. The officer followed the car to U-201 near I-215 before making a high-risk traffic stop, Tingey said.

The man inside the car did not turn out to be the suspected gunman from Wednesday, but he had information about the gunman that led the officer back to the motel. Charges for burglary and possession of stolen property against the couple stopped on the road were pending Friday.

Officers set up a containment around the motel and watched as McKenna walked out of a room carrying bags of numerous items, including a lap top, electric sander and several IDs, Tingey said. She was attempting to put the items into a second stolen vehicle when police detained her.
