Fund-raiser will feature banned literature, songs

A Broadway musical and one of the community's most popular fund-raising events are among this week's stage offerings.

AND THE BANNED PLAYED ON is Plan-B Theatre Company's big fund-raising activity, this year showcasing both literature and songs that have been banned at one time or another by various cultures.

Hosted by Doug Fabrizio of "Radio West" and Utah Sen. Scott McCoy, the evening will include examples of outlawed literature, presented by Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon, Salt Lake Library Director Nancy Tessman and Utah state Reps. Ralph Becker, Jackie Biskupski, David Litvak, Christine Johnson and Greta duJong. Banned songs will be performed by Kimberly, Cote, Chelsi Stahr, and Danny and Jen Tarasevich.

The evening starts at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Jeanne Wagner Theatre of the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. Broadway (300 South). All seats are $35, available at 355-2787, all ArtTix outlets or online at www.planbtheatre.org. There will also be a post-show reception by Vertical Diner.

THE MUSIC MAN, Meredith Willson's tribute to small-town USA, will be staged Friday through Aug. 18 in the SCERA Shell amphitheater, 745 S. State, Orem.

Jerry Elison is directing a cast of 92, including Dustin Parmley as professor Harold Hill and Suzana Garrett as Marian Paroo.

Performances are 8 p.m. nightly except Sundays and Wednesdays. General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children, senior citizens and students. Patrons may bring a blanket or rent a chair for $1. Reserved seating areas range from $12-$14 for adults and $10-$12 for children, seniors and students.

SOMETHING'S AFOOT, a fast-paced spoof of Agatha Christie mysteries, will play Friday through Sept. 15 in the Terrace Plaza Playhouse, 99 E. 4700 South, Ogden.

Dennis Ferrin is directing a cast that includes players from throughout northern Utah. Performances are Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9-$11 for adults and $6-$8 for children with discounts for senior citizens and students (393-0070).

THE CASTLE VALLEY PAGEANT, which depicts the sacrifices of settlers in central Utah, will be staged Thursday through Aug. 11 in Castle Dale.

Performances are at dusk, Thursday-Saturday of this week and Aug. 7-11 the following week. Admission is free (www.castlecountry.com). Preshow activities include a pioneer village with crafts, blacksmithing, weaving and spinning.
