Outdoor notes
A number of Mount Everest summits will discuss the high-altitude workers of Nepal during Snowbird's "An Everest Evening" on Aug. 9.
This is a fund-raiser for the Khumbu Climbing School and will feature Conrad Anker and several other western and Sherpa summiters at the Cliff Lodge at Snowbird.
There will be a film and slide presentation about the climbing school in the village of Phortse and Everest Region of Nepal. World record-holder Apa Sherpa and other Sherpa guests from the school will be present. Anker's successful ascent of the North Ridge of Everest and Apa Sherpa's successful Super Sherpa summit on the South Side will be revisited.
"An Everest Evening" includes a fund-raiser at the Cliff Lodge beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a live auction, silent auction and reception. The auction will include a donated wooden Grivel ice ax signed by all of the Everest summiters at the event. A ticket to the event is $50. For reservations and information on tickets, call 801-933-2147.
PRO BIKE RACE
Included in the field will be 16 of the world's elite riders competing in a mountain-cross format.
Among those entered will be two-time defending World Professional Champions and reigning World Cup Champions Michal Prokop of the Czech Republic and Jill Kintner of Seattle. They will be joined by Brian Lopes and Wade Bootes on the men's side and Tara Llanes and Melissa Buhl on the women's side.
The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 3 p.m. and includes racing and an interactive expo village.
This year's event will be staged on the a Y-cross race course, which combines the two forms of mountain bike racing into one unique discipline. Competitors begin the race on separate sides of the course before converging midway into a single course. On the lower section, racers must navigate a series of banked turns, tabletops, step-down jumps and rollers before the finish.
