While we debate the need for nuclear energy expansion in the Western states, others move ahead. More than 20 early site permits are under consideration. China, the 21st century economic Goliath, has acquired for operation in 2013, four 1.1 GW AP1000 Westinghouse Nuclear Plants equal to all Utah electrical power output. France uses 79 percent nuclear-generated electricity. There are no credible options for limiting greenhouse gases over the next few decades without nuclear energy. Renewable energy sources will serve their role, but reality will demand.
