Harry Potter: The orphaned son of wizards James and Lily Potter, Harry achieved fame in the wizard community when as an infant he survived an attack by the Dark Lord. The encounter left him with a scar on his forehead, and Voldemort has been after him ever since. At Hogwarts he is a star Seeker on the quidditch field, and his friends Ron and Hermione are his biggest allies.

Ron Weasley: A freckly, red-haired wizard, Ron is one of Harry's best friends and a fellow Gryffindor. Ron's family takes in Harry on holidays when he can't bear to be with the Dursleys. Though sometimes envious of Harry's fame, Ron remains loyal and has always helped Harry when he's been in danger.

Hermione Granger: A great friend to Harry, Hermione is an overachiever and at the top of their class. Inclined to follow the rules, she is oftentimes apprehensive about embarking on the trio's adventures. When her friends are in danger, however, Hermione is eager to use her wand, and her smarts, for the cause of good.

Lord Voldemort: He killed Harry's parents but lost his power when he attempted to kill Harry. Also known as "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named," "You-Know-Who" and the "Dark Lord," Voldemort is evil and is bent on attaining unmatched power. He was once a student at Hogwarts but was converted to the dark arts, where he gained power and influence over his many followers.

Albus Dumbledore: The headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he is Harry's most respected mentor. Dumbledore is a great magician and is rumored to be the only wizard whom Lord Voldemort fears. He assisted Harry in his run-ins with the Dark Lord but was killed by Professor Snape in Book 6. Some fans believe he will reappear in Book 7.

Professor Severus Snape: An unpleasant man, Snape takes out his adolescent disdain for Harry's father by verbally abusing young Potter. Though he has proved helpful in confrontations with the Dark Lord in the past, questions remain as to whether he is evil or good. Dumbledore maintained he is trustworthy.
