The confidence instilled in these students, both athletically and socially, is just one of the many rewards, said Dahl. From the tiniest kid, usually the coxswain who is the eyes of the boat, to the strongest rower, there are no superstars in rowing, only superstar teams. The saltiest rowers on Earth, as they call themselves, maybe the most unique rowers out, considering the lake they choose to row on.

"I think the Dead Sea is saltier, but I don't think they row on it," Dahl laughed. "When we compete in California, the other teams complain about the salt (in the ocean). We're like, this is fresh water for us."

Utah Crew has two major competitions planned: Seattle in the fall and Colorado in the spring, but those may not be the most exciting events. That distinction falls to the annual Camp and Row in Burley, Idaho. Here is where the real fun is, as students, families and coaches embark on the Snake River to camp, row and mostly just have a good time. The team does hope one day to compete in the Head of Charles, a huge international competition held annually in Boston. Dahl says anyone is welcome to be part of the Utah Crew team and if interested can inquire by calling the Crew-line at 916-CREW.

"The great thing about rowing is anyone can do it," said Harmony.
