Jazz personnel getting hip — replacements

Call it the Hip, Hip Hurray club.

Jazz radio play-by-play announcer Hot Rod Hundley is recovering from his. So is team psychologist Keith Henschen. Longtime assistant coach Phil Johnson was going to have his Wednesday but learned Monday it's being pushed back to next month. And broadcast analyst Ron Boone's is coming in September.

Then there is the king of them all, Jazz orthopedic surgeon Lyle Mason. He's had four in all, three on one side and one on the other.

What are they?

Hip-replacement surgeries, of all things.

That's right: All five members of the Jazz organization have had at least one or soon will, and it's not because of anything team trainer Gary Briggs is putting in the water bottles.

In most instances, it's a simple combination of arthritis and old age. Guess they're not all so hip after all. For others, namely Hundley and Boone, the problem is compounded by the wear and tear of long-ago NBA careers.

Boone said his hip started bothering him back in 2004, but he's just now getting around to having it replaced.

"Being the man I am," Boone, ahem, cracked, "I endured the pain all that time."

Here's what really led Boone to the operating room: "It's been killing my golf game," he said.
