C.J. Miles isn't at Jazz summer-league camp.
Jerry Sloan wishes he was.
"He's taking advice, I'm sure, of his agent. And I can't do anything about that," Sloan said when asked Tuesday about Miles, a restricted free agent who is under no contractual obligation to practice with the Jazz or play in the upcoming Rocky Mountain Revue.
"I just hope," Sloan added, "that he understands that playing basketball is what he needs ... And we wish him luck, whatever happens."
Miles' agent suggested Tuesday that too much is being made of the absence.
"Obviously not playing in the Revue is a business decision, and you'll see most guys around the league make the same decision," Billy Ceisler said. "It's not something that is uncommon."
Ceisler also suggested that Miles hopes to remain in Utah. The Jazz have extended a qualifying offer to him, but it hasn't been accepted.
"C.J. is 20 years old. He would like to play 15 years, 17 more years in Utah," the New York-based agent said. "It's a business first, and you keep your options open. But I think C.J. is happy to be part of the Utah Jazz ... He's a big fan of Utah, the (coaching) staff, the front office, everything."
Since he's not under contract, Miles evidently doesn't want to risk catastrophic injury playing in the summer league. Still, Sloan wishes the young shooting guard were taking part in the Revue.
"It's always been my belief ... that in order to make yourself better you have to play," the Jazz coach said. "You have to compete.
"That's what he needs."
FESENKO CLEARED: After spending the opening day of Revue camp watching from the sideline, Jazz 2007 second-round draft acquisition Kyrylo Fesenko received permission Tuesday morning from his club in the Ukraine to take part in this month's summer-league practices and games.
"I didn't even know that I could miss practices so much," said Fesenko, who remains under contract with Cherkaski Mavpi. "I'm so excited."
Fesenko's agent, Miami-based Jason Levien, remains hopeful his client can eventually buy out his contract (it would cost $500,000 this year) and join the Jazz for the coming season.
"We're continuing the dialogue with his team, Cherkaski," Levien said. "The immediate need was getting him to play in the summer league. Next step is addressing the buyout issue."
