An 18-year-old man has been charged with third-degree felony aggravated assault for shooting another man in the thigh and lower back.
The shooting occurred after a June 30 party disintegrated into a fight, according to charging documents filed in 3rd District Court on Monday. The fight had started over the sexual advances of a woman.
The shooting occurred near 2900 South and Berkshire Circle (7860 West) after the suspect saw the victim hitting his own wife during the fight, the suspect told police.
After the shooting, the victim's brother smashed the windshield of the suspect's car with a folding chair, according to the documents.
As his car was being smashed, the suspect drove off. He later buried the .22-caliber gun used in the assault, court documents stated.
Police later found both the gun and the suspect, who they arrested. He is currently being held in the Salt Lake County Jail on $5,000 bond.
If convicted of aggravated assault, the West Valley City man could be imprisoned for up to five years.
