In separate incidents, two arrested people tried to escape custody of the Salt Lake police by jumping out of moving police vehicles.

They didn't get far.

Officers say they arrested a 29-year-old woman Saturday in Pioneer Park for possession of a controlled substance. Because of the extremely hot temperatures, the officer decided to leave the rear window partially down for better ventilation for the woman.

While en route to the jail, the woman slipped out of her handcuffs, reached through the open window and opened the door from the outside, tumbling out of the moving police car and onto the road, police said.

The officer quickly pulled over and got her back into custody. The woman suffered road rash and was taken to the hospital for treatment, police said.

The other failed escape took place Friday when police attempted to transport a 26-year-old man to jail for inappropriately touching a woman at a park. When the police car approached the I-80 and I-15 northbound exchange, the officer noticed the man was out of his seat belt and kicked out the left rear window, police said.

Police say the man escaped on foot as the officer pulled the car over. More officers were called and began searching the area. Police found the man shortly afterward and took him to the jail in another police vehicle equipped with a seat-belt system and additional restraining devices. He was booked on multiple offenses, including forcible sexual abuse, escape by a prisoner, damage to a facility/jail, resisting arrest and warrants.
