SEATTLE Amazon.com Inc.'s marketing wizardry continues to pay off.
The Web retailer said Monday that nearly 1.6 million people worldwide have preordered "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final volume in the boy wizard series, compared with the 1.5 million manic muggles who signed up in advance for a copy of the sixth book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."
In the United States, Amazon.com said it has logged more than 1 million preorders, breaking the site-wide record of 919,000 total preorders set by previous installment.
For those set on cracking open "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" on Day One, Amazon.com said orders placed by noon Eastern time on July 17 will arrive on doorsteps July 21.
