RIVERDALE — All fireworks and open fires have been banned in a portion of this city due to the extreme fire danger.

The Riverdale Fire Marshal has instituted a ban from Parker Drive and the north city limits south to River Valley Drive to 700 West, across Riverdale Road to 1050 West and then to the north gate of Hill Air Force Base. The entire area east to the Riverdale city limits has also been included in the ban, fire officials said.

"The current conditions of vegetation in our area have created an extreme fire hazard, the worst in many years," Riverdale Fire Chief Doug Illum said in a statement Monday.

The fire restrictions are in place until Oct. 1.
