OGDEN — In their first meeting of the season with first-place Idaho Falls on Sunday, the second-place Ogden Raptors had a chance to make up ground in the Pioneer League South Division standings.

Instead of making up ground, the Raptors ran into quicksand.

Ogden, which trailed the Chukars by two games heading into the contest, outhit the Chukars and at the same time failed to take advantage of three Idaho Falls errors in falling, 4-2.

Ogden's loss, coupled with Orem's loss to Casper, has the two teams still tied for second, three games behind Idaho Falls.

"We left a lot of guys on base (eight), and when the second pitcher (Justin Phillips) came on we didn't make adjustments at the plate and that's what killed us," Ogden shortstop Jaime Pedroza said.

Idaho Falls starter Ben Norton handcuffed the Raptors for four innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out five.

Phillips also allowed one run on five hits while striking out three in five innings to earn his first victory of the season.

The Raptors had runners on base in each of Norton's innings, but only managed to score one run in the second on a single by Austin Gallagher.

Ogden left a runner on base in the first, two in the second, two in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Ogden starter Joe Jones fell to 0-3, but a decent outing by the offense should have left him with no less than a no-decision.

Idaho Falls (10-3) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the two-run victory.

The Raptors trimmed the Chukars's lead to 4-2 in the sixth on a RBI single by Erik Kanaby. Ogden, however, went down in order in the seventh, eighth innings and ninth innings.

Gallagher tallied three hits and drove in a run, and Henley Jansen also had three hits in Ogden's 10-hit attack. Erik Kanaby drove in Ogden's second run.

Anthony Seratelli had two of the Chukars' nine base knocks.

Game 2 of the three-game set is tonight at 7 at Lindquist Field.

NOTES: Ogden second baseman Elian Herrera suffered a neck stinger in a collision with Idaho Falls' Rubi Koko in the second inning. The game was delayed nearly 30 minutes while medical personnel attended to him before transporting him to the hospital in an ambulance. He is listed day-to-day.
