Until about age 80, head injuries are the most serious injuries that result from falls. After age 80, "orthopedic injuries can be as killing," including broken hips.

The report offers tips to prevent falls, including:

• Get a yearly physical and eye exam.

• Check medications to see if they cause side effects or interactions.

• Be examined for osteoporosis and follow doctor suggestions for strengthening and exercise programs.

• One of the most important things is to check your home for unstable furniture, loose throw rugs, slippery bathroom mats, missing railings, poor lighting and other hazards. Grab bars should be installed near toilets and in tubs and showers.

• Footwear is key, the report says. Wear flat shoes with sturdy nonslip soles and good ankle support.

• Toss out those slippers. They are unstable and shouldn't be worn. It's also dangerous to wear socks without shoes.

• Ditch the shoes with heels and get rid of old shoes or those that don't fit.
