From 6-foot-4 Boise State guard Coby Karl to 7-3 Romanian center Ionut Dragusin, the Jazz on Tuesday worked out a boatload of NBA Draft prospects nine in all ranging from small to tall.
Perhaps most intriguing was the mystery man who stood above the rest, someone Jazz brass first saw while in Houston to watch a workout by projected first-round pick Sean Williams.
"He's a big guy that nobody really knows about," Jazz player personnel director Walt Perrin said.
There is a reason Dragusin no Gheorghe Muresan, but no Vladimir Tepes either has slipped by some scouts. It's because his basketball resume is rather sparse, featuring just 36 minutes over nine games last season for the Spanish team Bruesa.
NBA potential?
"Good question," said Perrin, whose Jazz select 25th overall Thursday. "Can he play in the NBA right now? Probably not. We'll have to see about in the future."
The Boston Globe's Peter May recently wrote that when working out against Williams, the big Romanian "looked lost when he (a) had to guard someone, or (b) was guarded by someone."
Perrin, though, said "(he) doesn't have a bad shooting touch for his size."
That in mind, there is a chance some NBA team with a spare pick may draft Dragusin so they can protect his future rights and hope he turns into something.
JAZZ FAN: Why in the world did 7-foot Colorado State center Jason Smith a possible late lottery pick work out Tuesday for the Jazz?
Said Smith: "There are a lot of different circumstances that may happen with the draft. Trades or different things like that. I've just got to hit all the bases."
Rebuffing the notion the Jazz may be trying to trade up to get him, Perrin offered another answer.
"He likes Utah," Perrin said. "We don't think he'll be there (at 25). We think he'll be long-gone. But he wanted to come and work out for the coaches."
CONFIDENT KID: Nevada power forward Nick Fazekas, a first-round bubble pick, thinks Utah would be a good fit for him.
"The Jazz can play my style," said Fazekas, regarded as a super shooter but slow afoot. "They can really play any style, but the Jazz play a good style for me. I like to spread things out and shoot the ball."
Added Fazekas: "I feel I can shoot as good as any big man in the NBA right now."
