This is an extension of what Hatch got into the energy bill approved in 2005, but Hatch was "disappointed" it was not the full proposal.

The committee did approve Hatch's bill that would create tax credits for people who purchase plug-in electric-drive vehicles or plug-in hybrids, but the committee left out credits for manufacturers to make the vehicles.

"Consumers need access to affordable electric cars," Hatch said. "But we also need to support the infrastructure that puts these cars on the market."

Bennett, along with Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., wanted to see a "technology-neutral" tax incentive so any vehicle with a certain fuel efficiency could qualify for a tax credit, regardless of the technology it uses, but that was not included in the bill, according to Bennett's office.
