Chris Miles' acrylic-on-panel "Deja Vu," a richly rendered scene of rolling hills, meadows and sky, is this year's $5,000 Purchase Award-winner in the Deseret Morning News/Days of '47 Landscape Art Show, "Color of the Land."

First place in the competition, with a $1,000 award, went to Nate Ronninger for his oil-on-panel painting "2 Wrong Turns Don't Make a Right."

Cory Webster took second place and $800 with his small but opulently applied acrylic-on-panel piece, "Irrigation."

Third place, with $600, was given to Steve Kropp for his contemporary rendering of poplars in oil, "Late Summer Gold."

Five noncash honorable mentions were also awarded: Nancy S. Layton for her oil, "Snow Sage"; Robert D. McFarland for his watercolor, "Winterwood — Emigration Canyon"; Terrel VanLeeuwen for his oil, "Last Light"; Casandria Parsons for her oil, "Ready to Plant"; and Larry Clarkson for his oil, "Tree of Life."

During the exhibit's run at the Museum of Utah Art and History, which will be open to the public July 9-24, visitors will be allowed to vote for their personal favorites. Near the show's completion, two more honors — People's Choice awards — will be presented, each worth $200.

This year's jurors — Ruby Chacon, Edie Roberson and Brad Teare — selected a wide variety of work from the pieces entered.

A complete list of all artists participating in this year's show will be published in Thursday's Outdoors section.
