A fire gutted a home and partially collapsed its attic near 1100 South and 1300 East Thursday evening.
The home's sole occupant escaped safely, said Salt Lake Fire Asst. Chief Dennis McKone.
Neighbors and people walking their dogs gathered around the home as firefighters fought the blaze. A crowd of about 75 watched as the firefighters emerged from the blackened home and then sprayed the soot off one another.
The home caught fire about 6:45 p.m., McKone said. Firefighters arrived in about one minute.
Overall, the flames caused about $100,000 in damage, McKone said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, McKone said.
