Salt Lake City inventor James LeVoy Sorenson surprised a Primary Children's Medical Center fund-raising volunteer recently by pledging a $500,000 donation.

The donation was made during the hospital's annual telethon in early June. Other donations from the telethon totaled about $1.7 million.

Sorenson, inventor of the computerized heart monitor and the disposable intravenous catheter, has supported many organizations over the years, according to Sorenson Companies public relations officials.
