Utahns paying $2.81 for gas — when taxes are subtracted

She also said less imported oil is available, creating higher pump prices in a supply and demand market.

Utah's gasoline tax of 42.9 cents a gallon is 24th highest among the 50 states and District of Columbia. National average tax is $45.8 cents, so Utah is below that. Western states average the highest gasoline taxes of any region at 52.9 cents. The Beehive State is well below that figure.

However, Utah lawmakers have recently pondered a possible increase in state gasoline taxes.

Gasoline tips from AAA

• Check the AAA Web site, www.aaa.com, before you leave home on a trip to identify which stations in a particular city have the lowest prices.

• Don't fill up at the first station off a freeway exit. Travel farther to find lower prices.

• Do not fill up with gas near an airport, as prices there are almost always higher.
