According to Leah Barker (Readers' Forum, June 5), the average cost for a K-8 private school is $4,000, and a $3,000 voucher will go a long way toward helping low-income families send their children to private schools.
She then makes reference to families of four who make less than $25,000 per year. So, I am supposed to believe that a family of four, living on less than $25,000, is going to be able to come up with the additional $2,000 to send both of their kids to private school? Not to mention, of course, the costs of uniforms, transportation and other items not included in the tuition.
Barker highlighted exactly the point voucher opponents have been making. Even with a voucher, low-income families will not be able to afford private schools.
