Saturday afternoon at Cougar Stadium

.. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th

New Mexico 0 14 0 7 - 21

BYU 10 7 16 13 - 46

First quarter: Owen Pochman's 40-yard field goal gives BYU the lead with 8:28 remaining. The Cougars extend it to 10 points when Kevin Feterik and Ronney Jenkins team on a 52-yard touchdown pass in the final minute. New Mexico is held without a first down until quarterback Graham Leigh scrambles 56 yards on the final play of the quarter.

Second quarter: The Lobos capitalize on Leigh's run by eventually scoring on an 8-yard TD pass to Germany Thompson. With their lead cut to 10-7, the Cougars regain a comfort zone seven minutes later on a 9-yard scoring strike from Feterik to Kalani Sitake. New Mexico, however, later matches it with a 57-yard touchdown toss to Dion Marion.

Third quarter: Aside from failing to convert on a fourth-and-one situation from the New Mexico 8, all went well for BYU. Safety Jason Walker picked up his team-high sixth interception of the season; Byron Frisch tackled Lennox Gordon in the end zone for a safety; and Feterik throws two touchdown passes - a 52-yarder to Mike Rigell and a 31-yarder to Ben Horton.

Fourth quarter: Pochman breaks older brother Ethan's school record for consecutive PATs made when he connects on his 62nd straight. The kick followed a 52-yard touchdown run by Jenkins. Middle linebacker Rob Morris later adds a 51-yard interception return for a TD, but Pochman's kicking streak comes to an end when an excessive celebration penalty (Morris leaped into the end zone) tacks on 15 yards to the extra-point attempt. New Mexico caps all scoring with a late 10-yard touchdown pass from back-up Eric Jaworsky to Gordon.

Key play: A safety with 8:09 remaining in the third quarter increases BYU's lead to 19-14. The Cougars follow it up with a touchdown just 69 seconds later to begin pulling away.

Player of the game: Feterik. He completed 25 of 42 passes for four touchdowns and a career-high 422 yards.

Records: BYU 7-3 overall, 5-1 in WAC; New Mexico 3-7, 1-6.
