Rep. Kevin Garn, R-Layton, received more than twice as many votes as his opponent in Tuesday's House District 16 election.

Some of them, however, may have been cast by residents who should have been voting in the House District 15 race.Garn said he was contacted Friday by Davis County Clerk Margene Isom and asked to attend a meeting about an apparent problem with some of the ballots.

"She said she was going to meet with everyone Monday morning and talk about it," said Garn, who received enough votes from his GOP peers Friday to be named House majority leader. "She said there was no way that it could change the outcome of any of those elections."

Isom could not be reached for comment Friday. But according to Davis County Democratic Party officials, about 300 ballots for the District 16 contest were inadvertently given to voters who should have been making a choice in the District 15 race. Those votes were counted in the District 16 race even though those voters were ineligible, according to a press release from the Democrats.

In District 16, Garn defeated Democrat Todd B. Nilsen 4,903 votes to 2,201. In District 15, Rep. Blake Chard, R-Layton, beat Democrat Bea-trice R. Espinoza 3,081 votes to 1,385 votes.

Chard said Friday he had not heard from Isom but also had not been home much. He was not worried that his win might be nullified but was concerned some voters might have been "disenfranchised from the election process."

According to the Democrats, Monday's meeting is scheduled for 7 a.m. at the Davis County Courthouse.
