K-STATE COACH DIES: Jack Hartman, who coached Walt Frazier at Southern Illinois and won more games than anyone else in Kansas State basketball history, died Friday at 73.

Hartman, who had celebrated his birthday on Thursday, died of heart failure at a Santa Fe, N.M., hospital, the school said. His health had been failing in recent months.Hartman coached for 16 years at Kansas State, leading the Wildcats to a 295-169 record and nine postseason appearances. His eight-year stay at Southern Illinois was highlighted by the 1967 NIT title. Hartman had a men's Division I coaching record of 439-233.

Hartman was honored as National Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Writers after the 1980-81 season in which Kansas State reached the NCAA regional finals and made the cover of Sports Illustrated with an upset of second-ranked Oregon State.

Hartman also coached the United States to a gold medal in the 1983 Pan American Games, a team led by Michael Jordan, Chris Mullin and Sam Perkins. Among the NBA players Hartman coached at Kansas State were Rolando Blackman, Ed Nealy and Mike Evans.
