In making public policy, our legislators should look beyond political fixes. They must look at how they promote the state's interest, the consequences of their decisions, and the principles they want to uphold. At a time when we have an aging, shrinking and less skilled work force, immigrant children sitting in today's classrooms should be seen as an investment in our future.

At stake is our ability to regain the moral high ground as we advance policies in the public's interest consistent with our

cherished values. That responsibility goes beyond our elected leaders. It also rests with our religious, business and community leaders.

Our state needs elected leaders who have the courage to make decisions that are in the state's interest, rather than avoiding them by depending on unreliable studies they pick and choose. They ought to lead with courage and make decisions that are consistent with the principles that have always been the hallmark of our society.

I still believe we are all God's children.
