The winners and the losers

Winner: Four-year-old Andrew Hayes stayed cool under pressure this week. When his mother went into diabetic shock, he recognized what was happening and called his dad's cell phone. The chain of events he set in motion saved his mother's life.

He may be young, but Andrew set an example people many times his age would do well to follow.

Loser: Carbon-monoxide detectors are inexpensive, and yet most hotels, motels and resorts in Utah don't have them. A story in this paper on Thursday reported 27 deaths from 68 incidents over a 15 year period from 1989 to 2004.

Six states have laws requiring such detectors — although not specifically in each guest room. Because CO is impossible to detect without a monitor, Utah ought to consider requirements here. A little prevention could save a lot of grief.

Winner: Police, and everyone else for that matter, can finally put to rest the mystery of what happened to three men responsible for a deadly spree against law enforcement officers in 1998. A manhunt in the Four Corners area at the time involved 500 officers. One by one, remains of all three now have been found. The last one most likely was discovered by a cowboy this week (positive identification is pending). The only thing left to figure out is what really happened to cause their deaths. That's a mystery that may never be solved.
