Next, the zoo could redo its African Savannah exhibit with antelopes, rhinos and even a pride of lions. Zoo officials want exhibits to be a "catalyst for action," Dinsmore said, where people will feel encouraged to conserve wildlife and nature. The animals will act as ambassadors for that effort, he added.

As for the impact on Salt Lake County taxpayers, Dinsmore said the zoo would require minimal increases over the years. In 2003, Salt Lake voters approved a $10.2 million general-obligation bond for zoo upgrades. Seventy percent of voters approved the bond, which paid for the new Elephant Encounters and Asian Highlands exhibits.

Some zoo guests Wednesday said they wouldn't mind a tax increase to improve the zoo.

Murray mom Aurora White comes to the zoo about once a week in the summer with her daughters, Elizabeth, 6, and Malea, 2. She said she'd support the bond, especially if it means more spaces for the animals.

"The Elephant Encounter is beautiful, so is Asian Highlands," she said. "If it's the same quality, that would be very nice."
