With 11 bouts on tap at Saturday's Western Trial championships at the Salt Palace, boxers from across the country duked it out for a chance to go to next month's U.S. Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., and a chance to ultimately advance to the 2008 Beijing Games.

"I think I got a good shot," said 132-pound champion Roberto Vargas of Santa Ana, Calif., on his chances for Beijing.

Vargas will have his good shot if he fights the way he did Saturday night, defeating Enrique Nieves of Phoenix in a slugfest that was stopped at 54 seconds in the third round.

In other action, Diego Hurtado of Reno, Nev., defeated Francisco Ibarra of Brighton, Colo., on points, 55-36 in the 106-pound division; while Jerry Guevara of Brownsville, Texas, took care of business against Daniel Roman, Inglewood, Calif., in the 112-pound division. The fight was stopped with 1:28 seconds left in the third round.

In the 119-pound division, Sergio Perales of Los Fresnos, Texas, stopped Rick Lopez of Brighton when the fight was stopped at the 32-second mark of the third round.

Cleveland's Raynell Williams had his way with Daniel Martinez of Covina, Calif., in the most dominating victory of the night. The fight was stopped at 39 seconds in the first round. Williams is looking forward to the U.S. Championships after such an easy fight.

"I got some people up there that I'm looking forward to (fighting)," Williams said.

As for his chances to get to Beijing?

"Oh, I'm going," Williams boasted.

The 141-pound division was won by Mike Faragon of Schenectady, N.Y. He defeated Michael Concepcion, East Orange, N.J., in a squeaker, 39-37. Rodrigo Garcia of Santa Ana, Calif., beat Los Angeles' Demetrio Soto in the 152-pound division when the fight was stopped at the 1:01 mark of the second round.

Dominic Wade of Largo, Md., was victorious against Kelly Max Buchanan of Teague, Texas, in the 165-pound division when the fight was stopped at the 28 second mark of the third round.

That would be the last fight to end prematurely. The heavy boys all went to points.

In the 178-pound division, Lionell Thompson of Buffalo, N.Y., won against Philadelphia's Dennis Hasson, 22-17. Andres Taylor of Johnstown, Pa., defeated Akeem Holland of San Mateo, Calif., in the 201-pound division 27-10. And Houston's Justin Jones beat Tim Washington of Toledo, Ohio, 42-37 in the over 201-pound division.
