Plan-B announces new theater lineup
2 new works by local playwrights to join annual favorites
Plan-B Theatre Company, which is about to become only the third full Equity professional theater in Salt Lake City, has announced its 2007-08 season, including two local world premieres and one regional premiere of a recent off-Broadway musical.
In addition to its annual favorites a Halloween radio broadcast, the "And the Banned Played On" fund-raiser and the 24-hour "Slam" play-writing marathon Plan-B's new season will include all new dramas by Mary Dickson and Debora Threedy. All except the radio broadcast will be performed in Rose Wagner Center venues. Oct. 19-Nov. 4: "Exposed," by Mary Dickson, is about Utah's strange history with nuclear testing. Already cast, it will feature Joyce Cohen, Teri Cowan, Teresa Sanderson, Kirt Bateman, Carl Nelson and Jason Tatom (directed by Jerry Rapier).
Oct. 31: "Radio Hour," by local writer Matthew Ivan Bennett, is the company's third-annual Halloween-themed live radio drama, produced in partnership with KUER. Directed by Cheryl Ann Cluff.
Nov. 16-Dec. 30: "Gutenberg! The Musical!" by Scott Brown and Anthony King. This off-Broadway comedy is about two inept writers trying to sell their musical about Johann Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press. Featuring Kirt Bateman and Jay Perry, director Jerry Rapier says, "It has nothing whatsoever to do with Steve Guttenberg."
March 15-30: "The End of the Horizon," by Utahn Debora Threedy, about artist-naturalist Everett Reuss' mysterious disappearance in southern Utah in 1934. Two players have already been cast: Jason Bowcutt and Stephanie Howell. Kay Shean is directing.
May 17 only: "Slam" is Plan-B's fifth annual artistic adrenaline rush, where five 10-minute plays are written and rehearsed in 23 hours, with the 24th hour reserved for the public to see the final, unpredictable results.
June 8 and 15: "Script-in-Hand Series," the public's first glimpse of developing new plays by Utah writers.
July 21: "And the Banned Played On," Plan-B's sixth annual fund-raiser celebrating First Amendment rights.
