Frank is right to single out the Salt Lake Chamber and Scott Anderson/Zions Bank. With Lane Beattie's leadership and a number of strong chairmen over the last few years, the chamber has become a go-to organization, providing crucial leadership on big issues like transportation funding and downtown revitalization. What sets Anderson and Zions Bank apart is their involvement in so many good causes and their willingness to invest financial resources, not just lend moral support.

Lee Iacocca has a new book out that asks, "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?" I believe they're still here. But they're in niches. And in business, politics and civic niches, the model of an all-powerful, all-wise and benevolent leader or cadre of leaders that we all trust and follow doesn't work any longer.

Republican LaVarr Webb was policy deputy to Gov. Mike Leavitt and Deseret News managing editor. He now is a political consultant and lobbyist. E-mail: lwebb@exoro.com. Democrat Frank Pignanelli is Salt Lake attorney, lobbyist and political adviser. Pignanelli, who ran against Rocky Anderson for Salt Lake mayor in 2003, served 10 years in the Utah House of Representatives, six years as House minority leader. Pignanelli's spouse, D'Arcy Dixon Pignanelli, is a Utah state tax commissioner. E-mail: frankp@xmission.com.
