Your recent editorial on voting machines ("Vote 'no' on paper ballots," May 24) belies an incredible amount of ignorance concerning the serious problems repeatedly demonstrated in regard to Diebold electronic voting machines.
The technical community has done an excellent job showing that there are poor physical and logical security measures in place that could lead to tampering on an unprecedented scale. Indeed, it has been demonstrated that a hotel bar key and an inexpensive flash memory card combined with physical access to the machines could result in a thrown election.
Is it any wonder that Diebold has been sued by countless states and decertified in California? This is more than fretting by the "tin-foil hat brigade." This is a serious issue that deserves more than the snide dismissal of your editorial staff.
