Ancient giants stomp across the big screen

Scenes from "Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia" bring the ancient creatures to life.

LEHI — If you're interested in dinosaurs and in seeing how they might have lived without having to risk your life at a Jurassic Park, see the new flick at the XanGo Grand Theatre at Thanksgiving Point.

It's well done.

"Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia" has just the right blend of real-life findings, science and computer-generated giants.

It's fun to meet Professor Rodolfo Coria in Argentina and travel with him as he visits the sites of major discoveries in Patagonia.

But it's even better to visually visit the dinosaurs — including cute little baby ones — as they lumber, fight and fly over the earth as it existed for them 68 million years ago.

In 3-D and on the big screen, it's breathtaking.

The scenes are cleverly composed. Stories are told in the reflections of the professor's sunglasses, for instance.

Donald Sutherland's narration adds a nice, warm quality, particularly in some of the scenes with the computerized creatures.

"Dinosaurs can't fly!" he points out as a somewhat brainless dinosaur falls off the edge of the cliff he's been dancing on without much care or thought.

It's fascinating to watch as huge legs and tails and stomachs seem to plod right over the audience and smaller raptors try to take down a giant plant-eating argentinosaur.

The giganotosaur makes an appearance, a carnivore that could easily challenge the famous T. rex.

For anyone curious about these ancient creatures and the newest finds, this is a good dinosaur primer.

And it whets the appetite for more.

Sensitivity rating: may be too stimulating for very young children.
